I am a professional bagpiper and researcher specialising in the history, culture, and contemporary practice of Scottish bagpiping in Hong Kong and the Far East. I began playing the bagpipes at the age of 11. My early development was shaped by both experienced local pipers in Hong Kong and lessons with renowned Scottish pipers, including Douglas Murray, Stuart Liddell MBE, and Willie McCallum.
Over the past several years, I have competed in solo piping and pipe band competitions in the United Kingdom and have won solo prizes at Highland Games in Inveraray, the Roseneath Peninsula, Cowal, and Blair Atholl. My pipe band experience includes membership in the Royal Air Force Halton Pipe Band, the Denny and Dunipace Pipe Band, and the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo Pipes and Drums, and I was the first member of the National Youth Pipe Band of Scotland from the Far East.
I hold a Fellowship Diploma from the London College of Music in Scottish Traditional Music and a Level 8 certification in Scottish Piping awarded by the Scottish Qualifications Authority. I am also an approved assessor for the Piping and Drumming Qualifications Board, and I can conduct accredited examinations in Scottish bagpiping at all levels through the Scottish Qualifications Authority and the Piping and Drumming Qualifications Board.
Academically, I obtained a First-Class Honours Bachelor’s degree in social sciences and later completed a Doctor of Philosophy degree studying piping culture in former British colonies in the Far East, with a particular focus on Hong Kong and British Malaya. I have published research in this area and have taught courses related to Scottish piping culture. This website features selected publications, and my blog shares ongoing research materials and insights on Scottish bagpiping in the Far East.
As a professional bagpiper, I am available to perform at weddings, corporate events, and private functions. If you would like to enquire about performances, teaching, examinations, adjudication, or any other matters, please feel free to get in touch.
